New TV Series 'Bored To Death'

HBO has a new series starting this month called Bored to Death which may be something to check out.

What happens when a 'noir-fiction-obsessed' writer is heart-broken and wishes to avoid his own writing? He decides to become the very character he loves to read about.

"Based on the semi-autobiographical musings of eclectic author Jonathan Ames, Bored to Death tells the story of a writer who impulsively decides to list his private-detective services on Craigslist -- even though he’s unlicensed and has virtually no experience. Before long, Jonathan is hired by an assortment of desperate clients on a variety of cases, which he pursues while avoiding working on his second novel and writing for the magazine run by his eccentric boss George Christopher (Ted Danson). Bring On 'American Dreams'

I never watched American Dreams when it was originally on tv. I think it was on opposite something I wouldn't miss - maybe Ally McBeal.

One weekend I picked Season 1 up at Video Difference and fell in love. I loved seeing how the gender roles slowly evolved throughout the show with the influence of the women's liberation movement. I loved seeing how the characters developed within an era that was highly charged with tension and fear. And I also loved the music.

I really like the historical/cultural aspect of these types of shows (another great show was Homefront in the early 1990s which depicted small-town America in 1945 when all the soldiers returned home from the war).

So I've been wondering if they will ever put out season 2 as we were cliff-hangered with the Philadelphia riot of August 1964.

They Are Making Dorian Gray!

Why am I only hearing about this now! This is awesome.

From what I can tell they haven't released any information on when it will be coming to North America, but it's debuting in Britain in September. It stars cutie Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian to many of us) as Dorian and Colin Firth (or Mr. Darcy) as Lord Henry Wotten.

I read this a few years back as part of my annual 'Summer Read A Classic' goal and really loved it. I think this movie will really delve into how corrupt Dorian becomes and won't glamourize it. This will be my first visit to an opium den.

Now we just have to sit and wait for it to come to Canada. woop woop

My Yoga Got Up And Left

I've decided that I need to get in better shape.

I currently have a shape that seems to be efficient - it gets me from point A to point B. Nothing is rusty or falling apart. No leaks or weird noises. However, it's not of the 'lazing by the pool' caliber. And that seems to have taken on more importance as The Boy and I will be going on a cruise with the Rents-In-Law next April. So, that gives me 10 months to work towards a pass on my next 'lazing by the pool' inspection.

Knowing myself as well as I do, I've decided that my best option for getting in better shape is to do a few different things and to not join some gym I'm not going to attend. I'm thinking that a combination of activities might be best, such as skipping for cardio; yoga for strength, balance and flexibility; walking to work; and perhaps try to get myself into swimming again.

So last night I did a half hour of yoga. It was pretty interesting and I'm glad there are trees between our patio doors and the road. I apparently have no strength, balance and flexibility.

Johnny Depp Plays Mad Hatter

I could watch Johnny Depp silently standing in an empty room on his most 'un-polished' day and still love him. And the weird little idiosyncrasies he has just adds to his appeal.

I also tend to love the movies he makes with his weird little buddy Tim Burton.

However, I don't know that I was originally too excited when I heard Tim and Johnny were re-making Alice In Wonderland. I have to admit I wasn't too impressed with Tim's re-make of Willy Wonka. So I was a bit hesitant on this project.

That being said, get a load of these pictures of Johnny and Helena Bonham Carter! They look absolutely brilliant. Now I can't wait to check it out.

Tim, don't let me down again!

What's Happening In Halifax?

It looks like there will be a lunar eclipse right here on Earth in Halifax this June 13th. During Halifax Bike Week, and in association with World Naked Bike Ride, many will ride through town in their birthday suits wearing slogans like "Less Gas, More Ass" and "Stop Indecent Exposure to Vehicle Emissions."

"The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture," says the WNBR website. The protest is for issues like the environment and body image. "Some people just like the artistic idea of doing something a little off kilter in a large group of bicycles," says MacDonald (event organizer).

For those interested in participating or supporting (or ogling), the bike ride convenes at 2. p.m. at the North Common water fountain.

Getting Ready For True Blood - Season 2

I just got an email that the new Sookie book is in at the Library for me. I'm so very excited. Just in time for season two of True Blood. However, I'm not sure I'll get this one read before next Sunday as I have many, many books out from the Library that will have to be read first.

I thought about reading the second Sookie book before the new season started. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole book versus move/tv show thing.

On one hand I like to see the show without having read the book so that I'm not bias on how the characters are suppose to look, or any changes they make to plot development. On the other hand I cannot read a book after watching it because all I see is the movie playing in my head. I probably lean towards the 'read book prior to watching it' preference. Which do you prefer?

Chris Isaak Has A New CD & A New Show

Chris Isaak will be putting out a new album on Feb 24th titled 'Mr. Lucky'. He also has a new show on BIO on Thursday nights called the Chris Isaak Hour.

His first 5 guests are Stevie Nicks, Chicago, Trish Yearwood, Glen Campbell and Michael Buble. You can read more about what Chris is up to on his website.

Weekend Update Part 2 of 2

On Saturday, The Boy, Fancy, Fancy's lady friend and I went to the Redwood Grill for brunch. The food was pretty good; the company was great. We ended up going back home after the boys made plans to 'bring me an egg' (WOW geek talk).

Saturday night we had tickets to go see Neil Young (ya baby yah). Okay, I have to admit that I am not a huge Neil fan. There are songs of his that I really like, maybe even love. However, I am not the fan that would kill to go to his concert. Well, I believe that might have been the best concert I've ever been to. I've never been at a concert where the crowd was as into the band/singer as this one. It was freakin awesome!

Before the concert we all met up at Peke's place for a couple of drinks and we decided we should car pool so that we can go out after the concert to the Gloryhound and the Skyhawks after party. So after the concert we head on down to the Seahorse for some well deserved beer. The Boy and I ended up having to wait in line to get in the bar. We weren't sure the others were even going to make it in as we didn't see them in the line. We decided that we would go in and have a quick drink and then go home. By the time we had our drinks in hand, the rest of the crew made it in. We had a great time! I haven't been out drinking with the girls (and The Boy) in a long time.

On the way home we decided we needed to stop for food (and we were also on an unsuccessful quest for a bathroom - how can all bathrooms in the downtown area be out of order,...interesting). I have been introduced to the Chicken Shawarma, and I am in love! I'm going to go back for another chicken shawarma to see if it's still as good now that it's not 3 a.m. in the morning and I'm sober. I'm sure it will be. What do you think?

The next morning, although I believe I was still full from my chicken shawarma, we all met up for brunch at Cosy Snack Bar. This is a personal favourite of Peke's. Cosy's is a quaint little restaurant tucked away that people really should know about - but, you almost don't want them to find out about it because you don't want to share.

Weekend Update Part 1 of 2

We just had the best freakin' weekend. Jam packed full of music, food and fun.

First we went out Friday night to the Q104 25th anniversary party. The concert line-up was full of bands I haven't seen before, so I was really excited about the evening.

The headliner was going to be April Wine. Unfortunately, Myles Goodwin took ill at the airport and was immediately rushed to the hospital. The Henman brothers did make it to the concert and received an award on behalf of the band.

So, the line-up ended up being Joel Plaskett Emergency, Matt Mays, Sam Roberts and 54-40.

My girlfriend, Coneycat, has been a fan of Matt Mays for a while now. Apparently she derived some sort of pleasure in seeing Matt in his white suit. Not sure what that was about. :) I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked him, and I would have to agree with Coneycat's 'cuddly werewolf' description for him.

Sam Roberts was really good. Unfortunately, by the time he came on stage, the audience was half drunk and the other half were loosing steam from standing around all night. So I'm not sure we gave him the best welcome, but I still think he rocked it out.

There was a bit too much time between Sam Roberts and 54-40, so that when 54-40 came on, the crowd had started to take off and The Boy and I ended up leaving half way through his set.

Overall the evening was pretty fun. There were a few things that I didn't think were very well organized; however, there were some cool things going on too. For example, they ran some old footage from the last 25 years - old commercials and stuff. They were pretty funny.

Committed And Liking It

I received an exciting call from coneycat yesterday. It seems one of our favourite singers will be here next weekend at the Seahorse - Carmen Townsend. Anyone who knows me well knows that I try not to commit myself to plans as I tend to cancel on people a lot (not one of my favourite personality traits, but there you go). However, there was no hesitation from me to commit to this event. I love this lady's rockin' voice and she puts on a great show.

Here is a video from when Carmen played during the 2007 ECMA showcases (I'm pretty sure it is anyway - it might be from 2008). Coneycat, The Boy and I were actually there that night (sitting to the left side of the stage with a great view). Let me tell you, it sounds awesome on the video - and it was way cooler live!

If I Ruled The World

If I ruled the world, people wouldn't be allowed to go number two in public bathrooms.

Come on people, Mr. Hanky needs to be put on a schedule. He needs to have a daily routine so that he can feel secure and confident. Mr. Hanky values routine and stability.

That's not to say that sometimes you may need to be a little bit flexible with Mr. Hanky. Sometimes Mr. Hanky can be fussy and unpredictable. That's okay.

But if you are one of those people who have gotten Mr. Hanky on a schedule between 9 to 5, you need to seriously consider gradually adjusting his schedule to home-time.

Think about it.

SYTYCD Season 4

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is that time of year once again. So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 is in full-swing. This is going to be the best year yet! Last year I had a favourite from day one - this year it's anyone's win. The dancers this year are fabulous, I think there are going to be many sad Thursday nights as we watch our favourite dancers get voted off one-by-one until only one remains. There are six dancers that I'm trying to choose between right now, maybe more!

Last night The Boy and I went over the Ray & Ed's place to hang out when Ray mentions the show starting up again. We tell her that we've been watching too and that we love the show. Ed mentions that Ray has a girl-crush on Cat! Well am I excited or what! I too have a girl-crush on Cat. Mia said it best last week when she called Cat a perfect lady. She seems to be the sweetest person ever - truly sincere. And she comes out with some outrageous outfits sometimes, but they totally work for her - what with being 7 feet tall and all.

3rd Annual Tiki Party & Bubba Ray

On Saturday we held the 3rd Annual Tiki Party in celebration of the first day of summer and as kick-off for all our summer festivities.

Once again the party was a bit on the tame side. I can't wait until we own a house so we can have a big backyard barbecue and get a bit rowdier. But for now we must make do with our little living room.

This year we decided to have a brunch party and The Boy provided pancakes. Beck proclaimed them to be the best pancakes she's ever eaten. I believe it was the aerosol whipped cream that won him that title.

After we ate and chatted for a bit, we watched some Tiki Bar TV episodes. Most of our friends had never seen them before and we felt we should torture them. However, they really liked them and we ended up watching quite a few episodes.

We came upon an episode that I am sure will continue to be brought up at social events. The episode is called Bunnies and it introduces a new drinking game to the viewer (the game rules are also found on their website). Dee was very insistent that we must play this game at the bar. I think she's trying to get us kicked out!

The cat eventually decided to use the planter outside on the balcony as his bathroom, perhaps as form of protest. The little planter pooper is going to drive me to drink - more than I already do. Shortly after this 'fun party game' we decided to go downtown to find a patio - which ended up being sitting in a noisy pub eating wings.

We went to Bubba Ray's, which has 50 different sauces for its wings and 26 plasma tvs for your viewing pleasure. They were playing the Russia/Netherlands quarter-final game. It was getting very heated for those who are dedicated fans. One jackass sitting close to us kept shouting at the other team's fans and sitting down and laughing to his friends. It was obvious he was just trying to get something started. He eventually gave up and left. However, there were others ready to take his place as jerk-o-the-year. But, the food was very good and what I could hear of the conversation was excellent.

Why I Need A New Kitchen

One of the items on my list of things to do this year is renovate my kitchen. It is a sad mess. It looks like it just stepped out of a cheap 80s apartment. I've given myself until the end of July to finish the painting; however, I'm trying to decide if I should get new counter-tops. If I do get new counter-tops, I'll probably want to paint after they are installed. Decisions, decisions.

Here are some before pictures of my nasty kitchen:

We have a little galley kitchen that could look really cute once it's all painted and decorated properly. The first picture is the left hand side of the kitchen and the second picture is the right hand side (the microwave end would be opposite of the stove).

I think I mentioned before that I'd like to do a mid-century modish type decor in the kitchen. I haven't quite figured it out - but I've got something in mind, I just need to pull it together.

So far the only things I've gotten done is I've ripped the wallpaper off that had been put up as a back-splash, I've done some crack-filling to fill up the holes that the wallpaper covered, and we purchased new appliances. We still have a long way to go.

I almost forgot...when we bought the condo the kitchen had a bright red, double sink with a bright red faucet. It was quite funny.

Attack Of The Beechers

This past weekend I was inundated with Rock Band enthusiasts.

Saturday started off with me trying to get The Boy to go out and do something with me. However, it became apparent very quickly that, although he was verbally agreeing with me, he was less than enthusiastic over this idea. So, taking pity on The Boy, I suggested he give Fancy a call to come over and play with him. (I wish I was a game-playing type of girl....but I really just ain't)

So Fancy was called over and I gave Beck a call to join in the festivities. As Beck put it, 'When I answered the phone yesterday afternoon, the question posed to me was: "I've got two boys here who are looking for a lead singer. Interested?"' I believe it ended up being 5 hours of singing for Beck and I think she gets the gig with 'The Beechers'. You can read more on Beck's experience with her audition here.

Fun was had by all - as well as wieners (I insisted on barbecued hot-dogs).
