What happens when a 'noir-fiction-obsessed' writer is heart-broken and wishes to avoid his own writing? He decides to become the very character he loves to read about.
"Based on the semi-autobiographical musings of eclectic author Jonathan Ames, Bored to Death tells the story of a writer who impulsively decides to list his private-detective services on Craigslist -- even though he’s unlicensed and has virtually no experience. Before long, Jonathan is hired by an assortment of desperate clients on a variety of cases, which he pursues while avoiding working on his second novel and writing for the magazine run by his eccentric boss George Christopher (Ted Danson). He also passes time with his pal, a droll cartoonist named Ray (Zach Galifianakis)." (taken from http://www.hbocanada.com/boredtodeath/ab

One weekend I picked Season 1 up at Video Difference and fell in love. I loved seeing how the gender roles slowly evolved throughout the show with the influence of the women's liberation movement. I loved seeing how the characters developed within an era that was highly charged with tension and fear. And I also loved the music.
I really like the historical/cultural aspect of these types of shows (another great show was Homefront in the early 1990s which depicted small-town America in 1945 when all the soldiers returned home from the war).
So I've been wondering if they will ever put out season 2 as we were cliff-hangered with the Philadelphia riot of August 1964.
I just came across this message on the American Dreams Fan Site: [Updated May 30, 2009]
Please continue to send in your emails! I have forwarded all of your emails to Jonathan Prince, and he is working hard to bring you American Dreams Seasons 2 and 3. Thank you so much for taking the time to write. Here is the latest update from Mr. Prince:
“Please let all the AMERICAN DREAMS faithful know that all of their emails have been extremely helpful as we push toward our two goals: first, to finally put together a syndication deal so they can watch all three seasons of ‘American Dreams’ on TV (not yet sure if we’ll be broadcast or cable), and second, to release the show (as well as the unaired ‘epilogue’) on DVD.”
I'll be waiting with held-breath for this one. Lets hope it happens.

From what I can tell they haven't released any information on when it will be coming to North America, but it's debuting in Britain in September. It stars cutie Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian to many of us) as Dorian and Colin Firth (or Mr. Darcy) as Lord Henry Wotten.
I read this a few years back as part of my annual 'Summer Read A Classic' goal and really loved it. I think this movie will really delve into how corrupt Dorian becomes and won't glamourize it. This will be my first visit to an opium den.
Now we just have to sit and wait for it to come to Canada. woop woop

Coneycat called us on Saturday to see if we wanted to go down and see a singer and eat some yummy ribs, and I desperately needed to get out of a funk, so we decided to go. It was a nice afternoon and the AC helped me cheer up. And what do we see? A gentleman zombie and his zombie lady friend stopping to have a beer.
What's funny about this is that we didn't even blink at how the dude looked and we didn't remember the Zombie Walk was going on until a few minutes later. This just goes to show that you see all kinds in Halifax.
Here's a video of some of this year's freaky zombies. Wait until you get in about 20 seconds for the scariest zombie of them all. :)

Ray wrote to tell us that Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead is going to be made into a tv show. Ray was the one who actually introduced The Boy and I to the comic series, which is about 'a band of small town survivors of a worldwide zombie apocalypse. The comic's success is said to be from Kirkman's character development as their personalities change under the stress of the constant struggle against the zombies. New survivors are added to the group as others meet gruesome ends at the hands of the undead' (taken from icv2.com). The comics are pretty good. I think The Boy really likes them; whereas, I'm taking a bit more time to get into them.
What I lied about is this. When I received her email about the new tv series I proceeded to blast her for not reading my blog because, as I told her, I already wrote about this a while ago. Do you see the problem with that statement? I never did! I was totally thinking about the time I wrote about Anita Baker becoming a tv series. Oops! I suck! I told her I was a big liar. I'm sure she'll use this against me in the future. :)

This year the weather was wonderful - none of the crazy sand storms or hurricanes! Just sun and fun on the beach.
The Boy and I got on the road about 2:30ish to begin our long drive up to northern NB. It was an extra long drive as our front wheel bearing was gone and Betty (our car) was very loud. And we don't have any AC either so we had to drive with windows down. I'm sure you can imagine The Boy and I screaming at each other over road noise, bearing noise and the tunes of our annual Survivor NB soundtrack blaring.
Saturday we did some swimming and went into town to do some shopping and Dixie Lee. In the evening we ate and drank and told tall stories and sat around the fire making fun of each other. Sunday we got up and did it all over again.
Monday morning we woke to rain. Most of us were on the road by 9:00 a.m. The Boy and I offered to drive Dre's Mom's Sister home to M`City (she was a riot!) on our way to The Boy's parent's home.
Next we were off to my parent's place. It seems they are being overrun with bunnies. In this picture there are five bunnies - but there were many more all over the yard and under cars. You had to poke them with a stick to get them out from under the car if you wanted to drive somewhere. I chased those bunnies for two days and none of them would be my friend.
I now look forward to having hasenpfeffer. Stupid bunnies!

The lineup was pretty cool and included Dog Day, In Flight Safety (who I've seen before with coneycat at the ECMAs), Arkells, Plants and Animals, Hey Rosetta, Handsome Furs, Dinosaur Jr., Metric, and The Offspring. We had never heard Handsome Furs before and we really liked them. They are from Montreal and have a 80s new wavy/punk kind of feel to them. Totally up my alley.
The Tragically Hip were suppose to headline; however, they had some sort of family emergency and couldn't make it. The cool thing is the Virgin organizers decided to refund everyone's tickets! And The Offspring were really good. So alls well that ends well.
Here's a little snippet of The Offspring. The least shaky one I could find. :)

I currently have a shape that seems to be efficient - it gets me from point A to point B. Nothing is rusty or falling apart. No leaks or weird noises. However, it's not of the 'lazing by the pool' caliber. And that seems to have taken on more importance as The Boy and I will be going on a cruise with the Rents-In-Law next April. So, that gives me 10 months to work towards a pass on my next 'lazing by the pool' inspection.
Knowing myself as well as I do, I've decided that my best option for getting in better shape is to do a few different things and to not join some gym I'm not going to attend. I'm thinking that a combination of activities might be best, such as skipping for cardio; yoga for strength, balance and flexibility; walking to work; and perhaps try to get myself into swimming again.
So last night I did a half hour of yoga. It was pretty interesting and I'm glad there are trees between our patio doors and the road. I apparently have no strength, balance and flexibility.
The above images tell the story of how the position should look and how it looked when I performed it.

I could watch Johnny Depp silently standing in an empty room on his most 'un-polished' day and still love him. And the weird little idiosyncrasies he has just adds to his appeal.
I also tend to love the movies he makes with his weird little buddy Tim Burton.
However, I don't know that I was originally too excited when I heard Tim and Johnny were re-making Alice In Wonderland. I have to admit I wasn't too impressed with Tim's re-make of Willy Wonka. So I was a bit hesitant on this project.
That being said, get a load of these pictures of Johnny and Helena Bonham Carter! They look absolutely brilliant. Now I can't wait to check it out.
Tim, don't let me down again!

"The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against car culture," says the WNBR website. The protest is for issues like the environment and body image. "Some people just like the artistic idea of doing something a little off kilter in a large group of bicycles," says MacDonald (event organizer).
For those interested in participating or supporting (or ogling), the bike ride convenes at 2. p.m. at the North Common water fountain.

I thought about reading the second Sookie book before the new season started. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole book versus move/tv show thing.
On one hand I like to see the show without having read the book so that I'm not bias on how the characters are suppose to look, or any changes they make to plot development. On the other hand I cannot read a book after watching it because all I see is the movie playing in my head. I probably lean towards the 'read book prior to watching it' preference. Which do you prefer?

I grew up reading Archie comics. Even as a small child I held the hope that one day Archie, having had an opportunity to see the world and grow up a bit, would eventually realize that Betty is the girl for him. Not that I truly understood what the heck Betty saw in Archie. But the girl was in love and I supported her in this.
Now you might be thinking, "why then are you not supporting Archie in his choice?" And to you I say "plllhhhh!" Let's face it. Veronica is not a very nice girl. Not only does she manipulate everyone to her own wishes, but I'm not totally convinced that she doesn't only want Archie because Betty loves him.
It's not only Veronica's attitude that makes this relationship doomed. Veronica's dad hates Archie. What kind of foundation does that give a relationship? Archie's never going to be good enough for Veronica in her father's eyes. I can see it now....every fight they have, Veronica will run home to daddy (if they're not living with him because Veronica won't give up the luxurious life) and tell him how awful Archie is and that will put another log on the fire - fueling his already burning hate for his red-headed son-in-law. Nope. No good shall come of this.
I can't help but want to go back in time, become a fictional character, and go tell Betty what a wise friend of mine told me. "Stop being there!" Betty was far too accessible to Archie. Last minute dates, help with homework, doing crap Archie didn't want to do cause he wanted to go on a date with Veronica. No way should she have been doing all those things for him! I can't help but feel that Archie might have proposed to Betty if she had just been a little less available to him. It's worked before. It definitely couldn't have hurt her any.
I do hold a grain of hope that this is just a story idea to improve sales. Perhaps Archie will figure it out before it's too late. Perhaps Veronica will decide Archie is kind of a dork and break the engagement. Who knows. I guess I still harbour the sentiments of a 10 year old girl who wants the nice girl to finish first.
